I think the discussion of high and low culture is interesting.
They say that in the past it was thought that cinema was low culture. Now, even though there is said to be a more blurry line btw. high and low, cinema is one of the only ones that I think has really changed it’s meaning.
I think that cinema can be split into high and low, based on type, and that our culture in general has a very obvious view on which movies are high and which movies are low culture.
For example, Casablanca is a classic, an icon even, and I think that it would be considered high culture. Most people who are really into cinema have Casablanca as part of their collection. It upholds a certain status. However, a low culture movie would be something that doesn’t look like it has a lot of skill in cinema or that doesn’t have any deep meaning - something like Dude Where’s My Car; that is low culture.
